The Case for Motorcycling

Click to enlargeThe motorcycle industry, in partnership with the Riders are Voters coalition – the UK motorcycle community – have prepared a series of factsheets, which taken together comprise the ‘Case for Motorcycling’. The factsheets can be downloaded individually.

Each individual fact sheet presents a series of themed cases in areas where the industry feels that motorcycling should receive greater recognition and associated support from Government and public administrations. They cover the areas of transport policy, business/economy, motorcycle safety, environment and motorcycle sport.

The ‘Case’ was originally launched during 2010, but it has always intended that the initiative would remain ‘live’, allowing the ‘Case’ to be adapted for changing times and the evolving world of society and Government policy. In line with this, two new factsheets join the ‘Case’ from June 2011 – the ‘Societal Case’ and ‘The Case for Alternative Powered Motorcycling’. These outline developments in both fields and the role of the new ‘eMCI’.

The Case for Motorcycling also provides essential information about industry policies for trade/industry, motorcyclists, the media, public policy commentators, Government and Parliament.

Motorcycles and scooters have the potential to address many transport problems, also helping to reduce social exclusion, transport Co2 and improve quality of life. The potential benefits, both as a popular form of transport and as recreation, have been suppressed by a general failure of local and national authorities to 'Think Bike'.

The motorcycle industry and the UK's other principal motorcycle organisations are calling upon Government to ensure that future transport, business and social policy realises the full potential of biking by:

- Providing a fair deal for motorcycle riders, industry and sport.
- Making Motorcycles an integral part of the future transport mix: 'Think Bike'
- Refocusing road safety action on tackling the real causes of accidents.

Motorcycling represents a greatly untapped source of solutions for many issues facing society: traffic congestion, personal CO2 emissions, travel costs, flexible mobility. Significant contributions are made to national and local economies by motorcycle manufacture, sales and service, sport, transport and leisure. Motorcycling engages many young people in sporting activities, helping to reduce crime and social disorder in addition to fielding world class athletes and Champions in many disciplines.
