The MCITA Committee

Click to enlargeThe MCITA is represented by 7 highly experienced motorcycle trainers, appointed to represent the collective views of members.

The Committee meets 4 times per annum and in addition Committee members attend key meetings and events with Government agencies and other key stakeholders, concerning issues such as motorcycle safety and training standards.

There are currently 3 vacancies on the Committee.  This is due to the fact that 2 years ago when the Committee was formed the majority of the members joined together.  Therefore this would mean that 5 out of 7 would resign at exactly the same time.  It was agreed unanimously that this would be detrimental given the ongoing work taking place.  3 of our members stood down December 2010 to give other Trainers the opportunity to join at a staged approach and giving them time to get up to speed with the work of the groups and MCITA strategy.

The MCITA Committee members are:
  • Heather Boldy, Smart Rider Training (Chair)
  • William Rodwell, Lightning Motorcycle Training
  • Maggie Hawkes, 1st Castle School of Motoring & Motorcycle Training
  • Graham Kershaw, Motag Motorcycle Training
  • Steve Lucas, Streetwise Motorcycle Training
  • Simon Hadley, Ridesafe Training
  • Steve Smith, Aprilia Merseyside

Click to enlarge Heather Boldy grew up around motorcycling. Running businesses for nearly 25 years, Heather opened Smart Rider Training Limited in 1999. Wishing to explore and encompass all styles of riding and its assessment Heather holds a plethora of riding qualifications.

Committed to raising the standard within the rider training arena, Heather embarked on a programme of professional development. After initial teacher training in 1989 Heather completing a BA in Education and Training at the University of Huddersfield and a Certificate in Coaching and Mentoring at The University of Hull. Education continues to be Heather's passion and she is currently studying for yet another Degree.

Heather brings her extensive knowledge, understanding and experience of the training market for the benefit of MCITA members.

Click to enlarge Maggie Hawkes passed her full bike test when she was 17. Since leaving school she has always worked within the motor trade, mainly running a busy service department. Maggie first qualified in 2002 as a motorcycle instructor at 1st Castle School of Motoring and Motorcycle Traaining, the company she now owns with her husband. The company is a well respected family run business that cares about road safety.

Maggie has long believe that the motorcycle training industry needs a united voice and thinks that the MCITA is the way to delivering this.

Click to enlarge William Rodwell started his motorcycle training career in 1994 as an instructor. Previous to this, William was a geography teacher. William started Lightning Motorcycle Training in 1999 and in 2000 added an additional branch.

William has had plenty of interaction with DSA personnel both at a local and national level. William uses his role on the MCITA Committee as a way of promoting the interests of the motorcycle training industry. He has a genuine desire for fairness across the industry and would like to see the DSA carry out their tasks in a 'fair and competent' way.

Click to enlarge Graham Kershaw is the Managing Director of Motag and has been involved in the motorcycle training industry for over 40 years. He has also had lots of involvement with schools projects including tutoring and moderating the Northern Ireland Road User Studies GCSE.

Graham has also been involved in the development in a number of courses including NVQ's at various levels. One of these courses is specifically about training the motorcycle trainer.

Click to enlarge Steve Lucas started riding motorcycles on the road aged 16. He became a motorcycle instructor in 1999 as a CBT instructor. In 2000 Steve completed the Cardington/Direct access assessments and has been a full time instructor ever since.

Simon Hadley spent 25 years in HM Forces and acquired all driver license categories including motorcycle and tracked. Simon has trained and ridden with the White Helmets Motorcycle Display Team and spent 3 years riding Pans as a Royal Dispatcher out of Buckingham Palace and conducting ceremonial escort duties. On leaving the forces as a qualified instructor he established RST Training in 2007. Simon now holds the IAM, RPMT, two RoSPA Gold’s and a BTEC Diploma.

As a small business and the current issues at stake, the only way forward was to join MCITA becoming the largest “One Voice” to promote the industry for the benefit of the customers and the trainers.

Click to enlarge Steve Smith has been an instructor for 28 years and a dealer for 26. He has completed factory technician courses for Honda, Peugeot, and Cagiva. He is now a dealer for Aprilia and Derbi and soon will be adding the rest of the Piaggio range. Steve is very keen on trying to minimise the damage that successive legislation has on the industry but recognises that change is inevitable and in a lot of instances necessary. He believes that all sections of the industry needs to pull together and that it presents a professional and united image.
