Initial Rider Training Programme
In 1997 research into initial rider training standards throughout Europe reached six main conclusions:
That pre-licence rider training in Europe;
- Was widely variable and not always available
- Often prohibitively expensive
- Often unstructured and with poor instruction
- Over emphasised machine control skills
- Had little hazard awareness and avoidance focus
- Rarely addressed rider attitude and behaviour
(source: The Initial Rider Training Project – the needs and views of the rider, 1997).
As a result, the representative organisations of the motorcycling community agreed that training in Europe does not generally meet riders’ needs and a project was formed to develop a European approach to address the main problems. The Initial Rider Training Project (IRT) has now delivered an Initial Rider Training Programme covering four categories:
Theoretical
- Road regulations
- Sings and markings
- Machine dynamics
- Hazard awareness
- Helmets and appropriate clothing
- Social responsibilities
- Impairment
- Attitude and behaviour
Machine control

- First movements
- Gears, brakes and direction
- Steering and counter-steering
- Low speed manoeuvring
- Hazard management
