Your motorcycle helmet is the most important piece of kit you’ll ever own. You will need to look after it well and make sure you never drop it. If you do, it is important that you replace it – you can never tell what damage has been done under the shell. Some manufacturers can x-ray your helmet to check for damage.
It is vital that you get the right fit. Helmets are classed as safety products and this means that once you have bought one you cannot return it later. We would advise that you visit a retailer and try several to make sure you choose the best helmet for you. Price is not the only consideration. Comfort is important too, if it’s too tight you’ll get a headache, which won’t help your concentration, too loose and the helmet will move when you ride (which is very disturbing and not much use in the event of an accident).
In recognition of the importance of the Safety Helmet, the Department for Transport (DfT), began to test and rate helmets giving each a rating from one to five stars. The Safety Helmet Assessment and Rating Programme (SHARP) can help you make a more informed choice when choosing a helmet and offer some good advice about how to make sure your helmet fits correctly.
